...its calving season!
so we started the season off with a bang! my first ever set of twins! and boy were they ALOT of work! i now understand why the old farmers never got excited with multiple births...took me about 3 weeks for the cuteness to wear off and realize this is way more than i bargained for...
so why were the twins so much work??? well, for one, it was a heifer that had them! and it took a couple days for her milk to come in...but when it finally did, off they went! she lovingly accepted both of them (huge relief), and had plenty of milk for one, but two??? nope, so we supplemented bottles, twice a day, for about 3 weeks....and then finally, they began eating hay and grain and they slowly began to wean themselves from the bottle....down to one bottle a day...and eventually, they didnt want any bottles...
spoiled, just a little...but every calf born here on the farm gets spoiled the first month of life...some people call it imprinting, craziness, ridiculous, whatever.....i call it an investment, lol...alot of work in the beginning, but makes my job of breaking calves 4 months later a whole lot easier!

...farm for sale near MSU!
Location: Michigan
posted by steerplanet member dori36
Description: Well, after 2 years of leasing, my people who wrote a lease/purchase option with me in 2010, are unable to buy my small farm. So, once they're out and the place is all ready for new people, it will be available again. It's located about 25 minutes from the Michigan State University Livestock Pavillion and just 4 miles from I-96. It is the perfect small setup for show calves or whatever kind of livestock you might hope to show or raise. 15 total acres with 120 year old, classic updated farm house (3 br, 2ba) and two barns, one having been a Vet Clinic and remodeled into offices, 3 horse stalls and awesome calf/cattle pens. Large newer 3 sided run in shed. 2 Ritchie waterers, fenced and cross fenced in high tensile. I haven't lived in the place for 2 years so these pictures are from 2009-2010. Oh, yeah, whitetail deer just about everywhere and lots of other wildlife around the small pond. I may consider a short term lease to the "perfect" person with excellent credit but would prefer to sell it. I have more pictures I can email to you. Ph for me is 517-490-8133. Thanks for looking!

...ornery puppies and uncles!
so uncle john comes out last sunday afternoon to set up another deer hunting blind in preparation for the season...well...at least that was the excuse he gave us on the phone! when he gets here and opens up his truck door, out jumps this little red fire ball of a puppy, named pepper, appropriately...........
"uncle john!!!!" i say....with a look of dispair..."oh!!! she just needed to run around the farm a little, get a little exercise!" he says, with a cheesy grin......yeah right!
the afternoon goes by, and pepper and the little one hit it off fabulously! (i believe all according to pre-meditated plan!) finally, the time comes for uncle john to leave...."uncle john! get pepper! time for her to go bye bye" i say....and then...it starts....
"mommy!!!! please please please can i keep her???"
the rest of the conversation is somewhat of a blur...and the next thing i know, uncle john has jumped in the truck, waving and laughing hysterically has he pulls out of the driveway....puppy-less!!!!
introducing...pepper...newest addition to the farm..............................
